HOMEMADE HAM AND SCALLOPED POTATOES

Prep Time: 20 mins | Cook Time: 1 hr 30 mins | Yield: 4 to 6 Servings

This has always been my comfort food since the first time I tasted it. My only advice to you is to be very generous with the amount of cheese that you are going to add. Thank me later. Enjoy!

Ingredients:

4 tablespoon butter

4 tablespoon flour

3 cups of milk

salt and pepper

1 Tablespoon butter (for sauteed onions)

3 medium onions (thinly sliced)

8 medium peeled and thinly sliced Russett potatoes

24 ounces sliced ham (2 ham steaks cubed)

4 cups freshly grated mild cheddar


Directions:

Step 1: Prepare the oven and preheat to 175 degrees C or 350 degrees F.

Step 2: Brush melted butter in a 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 3: Place a saucepan on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high.

Step 4: Add 2 tablespoons of butter and allow it to melt.

Step 5: Add in flour and cook while stirring for 1 minute.

Step 6: Remove from the heat and add in milk. Whisk until well mixed.

Step 7: Put it back on the heat and simmer. Stir continuously until done.

Step 8: As soon as the sauce becomes thick, remove it from the heat.

Step 9: Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 10: Place a skillet on the stove and turn the heat to medium.

Step 11: Add butter and allow it to melt.

Step 12: Add in onions and cook until golden brown.

Step 13: Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 14: Add 1/3 of the white sauce on the bottom of the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.

Step 15: Place half of the potatoes over followed by layers if onions, ham, cheese, and 1/3 of the white sauce.

Step 16: Sprinkle salt and pepper on top. Repeat this method until all the ingredients are arranged in layers.

Step 17: Place it inside the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

Step 18: Remove from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature.

Step 19: Serve and enjoy!

Note:

Make sure to use freshly grated cheeses for a quick melt.
