Servings 4 sandwiches
Ingredients
- 1 pound lean ground beef
- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs
- 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
- 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 2 cups marinara or pasta sauce
- 4 hoagie rolls
- 4 tablespoons garlic butter
- 1 cup shredded provolone or mozzarella cheese
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Gently combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Shape the mixture into sixteen 1-inch meatballs and arrange them on the prepared baking sheet.
- Bake for about 20 minutes, until cooked through and the centers reach 160°F (71°C).
- Place the cooked meatballs and marinara sauce in a saucepan. Cover and simmer gently for 10 minutes.
- Spread garlic butter inside each hoagie roll. Place the rolls cut-side up on a baking sheet and broil for about 2–3 minutes, until lightly golden. Watch closely.
- Arrange the rolls in a 9 × 13-inch baking dish. Place 4 meatballs in each roll, spoon over a little sauce, and top with cheese.
- Broil for 2–3 minutes, until the cheese melts. Serve hot with extra sauce for dipping.
Meatball Sub Tip
Toast the rolls before adding the sauce and meatballs so the bread remains sturdy and the sandwich is easier to eat.
